Primary education in the country is in shambles. Pls clean it up.

April 1, 2009

classroomDuring the recent SSLC exams held across the entire state of TN, the true state of the government run schools came to light. In the Tiruvallur district, a newspaper quoted with picture proofs where 545 kids took the board exams without any benches or even fans. They were seated on the floor and with the help of pads did they take one of their future deciding exams.

India takes pride in the unprecedented economic growth for the past decade in every sector – in all the sectors which circulate money to the government. What about education? It’s true that we are producing the highest number of engineering and medical graduates every year. It’s also true that we are having world class international schools along with reputed medical, technological and management institutions which cater to every possible need of the students.

What about the majority of kids whose fate is decided in single room classes. A lot of government run schools still have single rooms which accommodate all of the primary classes. They don’t have proper building structures or teachers or blackboards or anything fitting.

I am sure the count of kids in international or high quality private schools is meager compared to the thousands of schools which have lakhs of kids run by all the state governments.

Our union education minister had recently proposed for caste based reservations in our premier educational institutions among much hype and revulsion. What is the need for it if the Government cannot provide strong foundation education to the deserving kids? Why can’t they offer the basic amenities at the least? I doubt the responsible ministers ever check out these things. Had they done it, our system of education would have been far better. Hope they at least learn from such incidents.

I have started to lose my trust in politics and politicians because of this negligence. There is buzz once in every 5 years and a shimmer of hope in their political agenda, but they all fail to take place. Who will be held responsible for this ever?
